In designing manual content, I can offer a useful perspective because I won’t know your product as you do – so I can view it as a customer would, and raise the questions that he would have.
I can test and exercise the equipment to check the validity of the manual content. I can also report on the results of such tests, especially if the user experience isn’t exactly as expected.
I can work onsite with your engineers to collect information for the manuals, as well as familiarising myself with all relevant quality and documentation standards.
I usually use Word for generating technical and manual copy, because this complies with most customers’ documentation systems. But I have also used FrameMaker, which seems to be particularly useful for managing larger documents.
